This is hard news to swallow… I hope everything alright and you guys continue to do well in the future.
Wanted to give a huge thank you for all the fantastic music and live shows, they were amazing experiences. Your fans truly appreciate all your time and effort you’ve put forth, don’t forget that.

I have seen you many times in Vancouver, and each time was even more exciting than the last. Sound Kapital was such an amazing album… I feel like I’ve been left at sea.

This is really tough for me to read. I’ve enjoyed all your albums immensely and even got to see you guys perform at SXSW a few years back. The passion and dedication you put into every song showed on your faces on every track you guys performed.
I feel sad today, but that is a selfish attitude for me to have since you have already given me so much joy with your music. I guess I should feel comforted in knowing the only permanent thing in life is impermanence.

Words cannot express our shock and sadness. Dan and Alexei, you rock. Your shows were nothing less than amazing. Your albums are phenomenal and the progression and growth of each has been a learning experience. Your genuine hellos and hugs at each show in WA even after not seeing you for months felt like seeing an old friend. We hope that you are both OK and that you continue to do and make amazing things, whether that be music, writing, or otherwise. With any luck our paths will cross again someday soon. I’m still reeling from the shock, guys. Despite all the financial troubles and discouragements we’ve run into for the past year or so, we have always looked at what you’ve done and read Alexei’s blog for inspiration and the will to keep going. As repeatedly mentioned here, words cannot express how much you both mean to us. We love you so much but at the same time respect your need to keep whatever it is that you’re going through, private. Of all the people I constantly struggle to avoid, I would strike a “casual” conversation with them just for another chance to meet you.
Thank you guys for all the memories and I hope to hang out with you again someday when the time is right.

I saw you two play every time you came to Ottawa. I bought all your albums, which is something I don’t do too often. I really liked you. Indeed a bummer, but I can certainly say you guys are going out on top. I’ve loved every one of your records, but Sound Kapital might very well be my favorite. I’m especially glad I was able to catch you guys live a bunch of times – your Bowery Ballroom show last year was killer, and proved in no uncertain terms that “Repatriated” was the best song of 2011. No matter what you guys do next, all of your future endeavors, you have a lifelong fan in me.
Hi guys – So sorry to hear Handsome Furs is no more. Sound Kapital is more than my favorite album of 2011, but also you wrote the soundtrack to our adoption of our son in China in the late summer. Repatriated has an emotional connection to me that time won’t erase. Thanks so much for sharing it with the world.

Fuck, I’ve never felt so gutted about a band calling it a day! Was lucky enough to catch you guys a few times when you came through the UK and I can honestly say you were the coolest, most likeable band I’ve ever seen/briefly chatted to.

I can’t even put it in to words how hearing this news makes me feel but it reminds me of how my 14 year old self felt when my then girlfriend went off to space camp and left me for some pre-pubescent astronaut.
I think I’m seriously heartbroken but wish you guys nothing but the best and hope all is well. Your music touched me so deep that I could listen to it when I was happy, when I was sad, and your albums were also my go to when I brought a lady back home yet in all these instances it fit perfectly. Thanks for being such great people every time I got to talk to you and putting on such heartfelt shows every performance. You guys are definitely going out while you’re on top and your music is timeless. Glad I got to show you guys my Plague Park tattoo on your last tour while I had the chance.
